Adam Ondra: Czech Mate

Brno, is an relatively unknown place in the South East of the Czech Republic. It is famous for two things, my grand-father and Adam Ondra.

That Brno has produced such a notable athlete is testament to the work-ethic that has seen Adam rise up through the ranks of international rock climbing as we march on toward the Olympic games.

Ondra’s more notable ascents in recent years include the 2nd ascent of Tommy Caldwell’s famed ‘Dawn Wall’ (5.14d / 9a) a grade that Ondra has added to with TCT (Italy), Il Domani (Spain) and the 2nd ever 9a onsight of

Ondra’s more notable ascents in recent years include the 2nd ascent of Tommy Caldwell’s famed ‘Dawn Wall’ (5.14d / 9a) a grade that Ondra has added to with TCT (Italy), Il Domani (Spain) and the 2nd ever 9a onsight of Switzerland’s Cabane au Canada.

Ondra has been hard at work in the post-Covid world. He has recently put up new Font 8C routes in his native Czech Republic, the latest of which he named ‘Brutal Rider’.

To put this into context, Adam’s hit-list since childhood looks like this:

  • In 2001 (at age eight) he onsighted 7b+ (5.12c) routes.
  • In 2002 (at age nine) he onsighted 7c+ (5.13a) and redpointed 8a (5.13b).
  • In 2003 (at age ten) he onsighted 8a (5.13b).
  • In 2004 (at age eleven) he onsighted 8a+ (5.13c)[7] and redpointed 8c (5.14b).
  • In 2005 (at age twelve) he onsighted 8b (5.13d).
  • In 2006 (at age thirteen) he managed to redpoint his first 9a (5.14d), Martin Krpan at Misja Pec.
